This post is a partial answer to that question. Of course, I haven't really become a responsible adult, but I feel closer to being one.
Last week, we had our third meeting with Dan, a very nice financial consultant who works for Investors Group. We have been in contact with Dan since late in June, but in the last six weeks we have actually been making plans. Our (okay, my) initial reason for contacting Dan was to set up an RESP. For those who don't know what that is, it's a "Registered Education Savings Plan". This is basically an investment for our children's education if they decide to go to school beyond high school. It's registered so that we can receive the CESG (Canada Education Savings Grant), which is a government program that basically adds a grant on top of our investments.
In addition to talking about RESPs, Dan also got us thinking about life insurance. So, not only do we have a savings plan set up for both the boys, but we also have insurance for the two of us. Add that to the RRSP that we already have, and I feel like a responsible adult. Well, at least financially responsible. As for any other meaning of the word, you'll have to ask my wife.
